Cameroon commemorates World Tree Day

Cameroon has joined the rest of the world to celebrate activities marking tree planting day. In Yaounde which hosted the celebration, twelve members of government converged at the Government High School Elig-Essono, presided at by the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, personal representative of the Prime Minister, Head of Government to highlight the importance of trees to the environment celebrated under the theme “Forests and Health”.

The presiding official, Prof Jacques Fame Ndongo reiterated the significance of the day, saying it is an opportunity to celebrate the forest in its diversity and to raise awareness of the importance of different types of forests.

This event provides a privileged moment for the sensitization of citizens, around the major interest that the tree represents in environmental education, the forest ecosystem in the balance of the biosphere, and its importance in the development of socio-economic activities.

It highlights, informs and sensitizes the public on the sustainable management of forests and on the services provided by our forests, such as the production of wood, fruit, medicinal plants, protection against soil erosion and other natural hazards, ecotourism, and refuge for many animal species.

Talking to the press, the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Jules Doret Ndongo said the choice of a school compound for the event is not only because the youth are is future of the nation but also because by involving students in the tree planting exercise, they are fighting against the harmful effects of climate change within the framework of environmental education.
