MINFOF signs MoU with ASBABUK in Bertoua

The Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife and the Association Sanguia Baka Buma’a Kpodé, ASBABUK have agreed in a revised MoU to provide the indigenous Baka community more access to natural resources in the protected areas of Lobeke, Nki and Boumba Bek national parks as well as the Ngoyla wildlife reserve in a bid to maintain their hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

Speaking during the event, the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Jules Doret Ndongo reiterated that this revised MoU is a landmark achievement in efforts aimed at promoting the rights of indigenous peoples and their communities to preserve biodiversity in the southeast of Cameroon.

In an earlier speech, the president of ASBABUK who signed on behalf of the Bakas expressed satisfaction for taking into consideration the plight of the 88 Baka communities, to the point of signing a revised MoU.

The consultation process which led to the signing on September 19 involved Minfof, the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Baka communities.
