The Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Jules Doret Ndongo has on behalf of the ministry under his command signed an MoU with TRAFFIC relating to the support for the conservation and sustainable management of forest and wildlife resources in Cameroon.

Present in Cameroon since 2008 and covers 8 of the 11 COMIFAC countries, TRAFFIC has carried out several projects which has enabled them to set up a national database on wildlife trade, monitor wildlife trade, exchange of information on wildlife species and associated products, draw up the link between wildlife crime and illegal logging and other crimes, forest governance, timber traceability and legality.

Visibly elated with the signing of the MoU this 4th July, 2023, Minister Jules Doret Ndongo in an address stated that though it comes long after COP15, it is remarkably symbolic as it will contribute in highlighting Cameroon’s image in terms of sustainable management of forest resources as well as the fight against wildlife trafficking. This will equally enable TRAFFIC to mobilize more funds in order to meet up with their goals in Cameroon in particular and the sub region in general.

Signing on behalf of TRAFFIC, the Director of the Central African bureau, Denis MAHONGHOL said the MoU will enable his office to support the revitalization of several committees (inter-ministerial committee, implementation committee, and wildlife crime committee; contribute to the training and capacity-building of MINFOF staff and institutions to facilitate activities of mutual interest; promote scientific and technical research on the problems of wildlife trade as listed in CITES appendices; support MINFOF in developing projects and mobilizing external funding; support the monitoring of litigation by legal counsel in courts; and support the system for verifying the legality and traceability of timber amongst others.
